Hipparchus (Hipparchos)

Hipparchus; Hipparchos, from Nicaea Vifinskoy, Ser. II in. BC. e., the Greek astronomer. His own notes indicate that he worked in 162-126 years. mainly Rhodes. Of his numerous works survived one early polemical commentary (3 books) to the poem Arata. It contains details on the location of stars, the critique of the views Arata and Eudoxus, a list of more than 800 stars. At work, which is for improving timekeeping and calendar, referred to Claudius Ptolemy, the other names found in Pliny the Elder. G. among other things invented the astrolabe, . was researching the position and movement of stars, . very accurately determined the duration of the solar year (365 days, . 5 o'clock, . 55 minutes), . began investigating the precession and the parallax and their mutual relationships (the so-called graph G.), . created trigonometry,

G. adopted the theory of epicycles, yet formulated by his predecessors (Apollonius of Perga), and, relying on his own observations rejected the heliocentric hypothesis of Aristarchus of Samos, which helped her to oblivion until the time of Copernicus. G. strongly argued with Eratosphen, creator of physical and mathematical geography, in the book against him facing. Although not the imperfection of instruments, the findings of Mr.. lead to the admiration of modern scholars. G. employ the Babylonian astronomers, scientists are once again blossomed in Borsippa, Uruk and Sippar in Seleucids.
