Biography Aquilino Vettius Guy Juvencus (Iuvencus, Gaius Vettius Aquilinus)
Juvencus, Gaius Vettius Aquilino; Iuvencus, Gaius Vettius Aquilinus, IV in. n. e., Latin epic poet. Coming from the famous family, the Spanish priest. Ok. 330, based on the Gospel of Matthew, wrote the first verse of Christian epic The Four Gospels (Evangelorium libri IV), expanding the original Gospel texts of other evangelists. Although S. wrote accurate, sometimes even beautiful hexameter and used the phraseology of the Roman epico (Lucretius, Ovid, and especially Virgil), he created an outstanding poetic work. Slavishly following the text of the Gospel, he even tried to give the product of genuine artistic. Merit S. lies in the fact that he adapted the language of ancient poetry to a new Christian content, and thus became a model for the later Christian poets. Deprived of the artistic merits of the product S. enjoyed in more recent times, great prestige and exerted considerable influence on the poets Carolingian Renaissance and Petrarch.
