Biography Meleager (Meleagros)
Meleager; Meleagros, from Ghadar, ca. 140-OK. 70 years. BC. e., Greek poet. He was born in Syrian Gadara, and then lived in Tire, in his old age he moved to Kos. M. wrote Menippean satire (not preserved) and epigrams, which we know about 130, almost all on erotic themes. There is little genuine feeling, but many borrowed from predecessors motives. However M. was a good poet, who was able to intrigue the reader, care about the ease of the verse, about the accuracy and elegance of expression. M. was the first known anthology of Greek epigrams Stephanos (a crown).
