Biography ORIBAZY (Oreibasios)
Oribazy; Oreibasios, from Pergamum, IV in. n. e., Greek physician. Personal physician of Emperor Julian the Apostate. In 361-363 years. collected excerpts from the works of famous doctors and incorporated them into a vast labor collection of medical knowledge (Iatrikai synagogai) in 70 books, compiled on a substantive principle (kn. I-VI - of diet and rehabilitation; VII-IX - on the blood-letting; IX-X - about the treatment and medicines; went further exposition of physiology and pathology). Survived 25 books (IX, XIV-XVI, XXI-XXII, XXIV-XXV, XLVI-LI) and excerpts from other books. O. also made for his son Eustathius popular version of the aforementioned compositions Synopsis pros Eustathion in 9 books (it is preserved in Latin translation). Both works are valuable resources for restoring the history of ancient medicine. For amateurs O. a book of recipes Domestic medicine (Euporista) in 4 books devoted Eunapius (preserved in Latin translation). O. was a good stylist and a skillful compiler. Zealous admirer of the teachings of Galen, he could not help all followed him, which he deserved unflattering nickname of "herbal monkeys.
