Astronaut Russia. Born Aug. 1, 1944 in the village (now - pgt) Koltubanovsky Buzuluk district of the Orenburg region in the family of a sailor. After graduating from high school worked as a concrete worker, then as a mechanic, and in 1962 entered the Chernigov Higher Military Aviation School for Pilots. After graduating in 1966, the school served as an instructor pilot in the aviation wing of the Air Forces of the USSR. In 1970 he enlisted in the detachment of Soviet cosmonauts (1970 Group of the Air Force? 5). It has been a full course of general space training and preparing to fly on spacecraft such as "Union". In May 1973, was included as a captain in one of their crews on the program of Soviet-American flight (EPAS). He was a support crew of a spacecraft "Soyuz-16" (jointly with Alexander Sergeyevich Ivanchenkov) at the start of December 2, 1974. Levchenko on board the spacecraft Soyuz TM-3 ". Length of stay in space was 326 days 11 hours 38 minutes. Over 3 flights flown in space 430 days 18 hours 21 minutes 31 seconds. In 1988 he resigned from the cosmonaut corps.

Engaged in social work, was a member of the Komsomol Central Committee.

Twice Hero of the Soviet Union (Decrees of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of 16 March 1978 and September 26, 1980). Awarded 3 orders of Lenin, Order of the Red Star and medals. Hero of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (1978). Hero of the Republic of Cuba (1980). He was awarded many foreign orders and medals. Awarded a gold medal Tsiolkovsky Academy of Sciences of the USSR, the gold medal of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Honorary citizen of Kaluga, Buzuluk (Russia), Arkalyk, Dzhezkazgan (Kazakhstan), Bratislava (Slovakia), Prague (Czech Republic), Houston (USA).
