Biography Helmut Volkmann (Volkmann)
Volkmann, Helmut (Volkmann), (1889-1940), General Germanic army, the commander of the Legion Condor.
Born February 28, 1889 in Dedenhofene. After the Cadet School, March 4, 1907 joined the Imperial Army. He received a commission on Aug. 18, 1908. Participant 1 WWI. October 1, 1932 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. April 1, 1934 Volkmann was appointed head of department in the Ministry of the Reichswehr. Then, in the rank of colonel, joined the Luftwaffe.
On October 6, 1936 to November 1937 Volkmann was the chief administrative Luftwaffe with the rank of Major. November 1, 1937 he, replacing Hugo Shperle as commander of the Legion Condor in Spain, held that position until October 31, 1938. From April to September 1939 headed the Military Academy of the Luftwaffe.
Then he was transferred to the Wehrmacht. August 25, 1939 he was awarded the rank of general of infantry. In 1940 he took command of the 95 th Infantry Division. Killed in a car accident on Aug. 21, 1940.
