Born January 3, 1892 in Bloemfontein (South Africa) in a family of settlers from Germany, hence - a somewhat unusual third name "Royle" (rather than Ruel, as he was commanded us to light someone's hand). He graduated from the University of Oxford. Participated in the First World War. In 1925 he returned to Oxford and worked there until his retirement (1959). As a scientist known primarily annotated edition of the Anglo-Saxon epic poem "Beowulf", . translations into modern English of medieval chivalry (in particular, . "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", . 1925), . as well as the essay "On Fairy-stories" (1947), . in which he outlined and justified his own concept mythopo, .
Tolkien was one of the "founding fathers" of the literary club "The Inklings", in Member States which were, in particular, Clive C. Lewis, Charles Williams, Owen Barfield. First feature article - a poem "The Battle on the eastern plains" (March 1911). Kudos to Tolkien, the writer came after the release of the trilogy "The Lord of the Rings", which only since 1954 th and 1966 th year stood fifteen editions, both in Britain and the United States. Died, John P. R. Tolkien September 2, 1973.
