PACKARD, David (Packard David) (7 September 1912, Pueblo, pc. Colorado - March 26, 1996, Stanford, pc. California), American engineer and entrepreneur, co-founder of Hewlett-Packard.

In 1934, received a bachelor's degree from Stanford University (pc. California) has been employed in the company of General Electric. In 1938 he returned to Stanford, where he received a diploma in electrical engineering, and in 1939 together with William Hewlett founded the company, which settled in the garage of a small two-storey house in Palo Alto. Initial capital is 538 (!) U.S.. Today on the wall of the garage decorate a plate, "Here began Silicon Valley", and the garage has become an integral landmark of California.

Many years passed and the company has become a world leader in the production of test and measurement systems, personal computers and printers. Packard served as president of the company from 1947 to 1964, the executive director from 1964 to 1968-th, chairman of the board from 1964 to 1968 and from 1972 to 1993, then until his death in 1996, served as honorary chairman, retired.

In 1968, President Richard Nixon Packard was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense. In this position he served until 1971, and in 1972 he returned to Hewlett-Packard. In the 1970's and 1980's Packard was an adviser to the White House on issues of security and management

Packard actively involved in public life. He headed many of the funds (in support of universities, youth organizations, societies, family planning, etc.) and charitable organizations. Important role played in the base of the largest in the world at the Monterey Aquarium, a device which was donated by the Packard family, 55 million. U.S.. One can rightfully say that his contribution to the social and technological development of the country is unprecedented.
