Biography Averincev Prokofiev
Averintsev, Sergei Sergeyevich (1937-2004), Russian philologist, cultural studies, bibleist, translator. Born December 10, 1937 in Moscow in the professorial family. In 1961 he graduated from the classical department of the Philological Faculty of Moscow State University, in 1967 defended his Ph.D. dissertation on Plutarch and ancient biography: On the spot classics of the genre in the history of the genre (the Lenin Komsomol Prize, 1968; publ. 1973). Combining a keen interest in the text with the universal erudition and literary criticism analyticity, explored the various strata of Europe, in t.ch. Christian culture - from antiquity to modern times, making a number of original historical and literary and theoretical discoveries (Article Philology in Short Literary Encyclopedia, t. 7, Moscow, 1978, the New Testament, Theism, Theocracy, Christianity, Eschatology, and many. dp. in Philosophical Encyclopedia, vols. 4, 5, Moscow, 1967, 1970; archetypes, Christianity, etc.. Since 1987 Averincev - Corresponding Member of USSR Academy of Sciences (1991 - RAS), USSR State Prize Laureate (1990) and Russia (1996). In 1989-1991 member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. In a sharp controversy 'neoslavyanofilov' and 'neozapadnikov' rejected the extremes of both positions, proposing, in a kind of inheritance of the teachings of St. Augustine, the thesis about the future of Christianity as the moral strength of the minority. He writes poetry (from the 1980's - the spiritual, oriented to European folklore and poetry: Imitation Claudel, and others).

Died Feb. 21, 2004 in Vienna, where he taught courses.
