BISHOP, Henry Rowley

Bishop, Henry Rowley (Bishop, Henry Rowley) (1786-1855), English conductor and composer, was born November 18, 1786 in London. He studied music with Francesco Bianchi, an Italian who settled in England. His first work - the opera "Angelina" (Angelina), premiered at the Royal Theater, Margot (1804). After two years at London's Royal Theater has successfully passed the opera "Tamerlane and Bayazet" (Tamerlan et Bajazet). Bishop's creative reputation has strengthened since the first and only performance of his opera "The Circassian Bride" (The Circassian Bride) in the theater 'Drury Lane' in 1809 (the day after the premiere fire destroyed the theater).

In 1810, Bishop was appointed conductor and composer of the theater 'Covent Garden'. Became one of the founder and conductor of the London Philharmonic Society, during the first season (1813) under his direction, a series of concerts. In 1825 became the conductor of the theater 'Drury Lane', and 5 years later - the music director of the amusement garden 'Vauxhall Gardens'. Same position he held in 'Covent Garden' (1840). In 1841-1843 he was a professor of music at Edinburgh University. In 1842 he was awarded the title of nobility. Later he became a professor of music at Oxford University (1848). He wrote over 130 compositions for the stage. Among his operas - "Girl from the mill" (The Maid of the Mill, . 1814), . "Cuffy" (The Slave, . 1816), . "Girl Merian" (Maid Marian, . 1822), . "Clary" (Clari, . 1823), . "Cortes" (Cortez, . 1823), . "The Crusaders" (Knights of the Cross, . 1826), . "Under the Oak" (Under the Oak, . 1830),
. In the opera Clary voiced Bishop's famous song "Home, sweet home" (Home, Sweet Home) to the words Dzh.H.Peyna. Composer also belong arrangements of Don Giovanni, Figaro, William Tell, and other popular operas, he is author of oratorios, cantatas and many songs for one and a few votes.

Bishop died in London on April 30, 1855.
