Born November 6, 1947 in g. Serov, Sverdlovsk region.
In 1964 he graduated from vocational school in Leningrad. In 1966 entered the Moscow Higher Command School of the KGB border of the USSR Council of Ministers of the USSR, but later was expelled from there for health reasons. In 1974 he graduated from the journalism faculty of Leningrad State University (LSU). Candidate of historical sciences.
