DREIFUS (Dreyfuss), Richard (p. 29. 10. 1947), American actor.
Born in Brooklyn in a Jewish family in his childhood he moved to Los Angeles where he still lives. On the decision to become an actor inspired by his views of old films on television. In the rebellious 60-ies he was interested in drug. Addiction to cocaine from 1973-1984 nearly cost him his career in film, because in 1981 he was completely exhausted mentally and physically. But that was then, and in the mid 60-ies because of the refusal to fight in Vietnam Dreyfus was sent to forced labor in the hospital. Later, this experience will help him play brilliantly paralyzed alone claim the right to commit suicide in the film 'Whose Life Is It, at the end kontsovN' (Whose Life Is It AnywayN, 1981).
. Debuting in the weak melodrama 'Valley of the Dolls' (Valley of the Dolls, 1967), Dreyfus subsist until 1972 minor roles until he played a shy guy in the cult film, George Lucas 'American Graffiti' (American Graffiti)
. As written by David Kavanagh, 'Richard brought to the screen features of the future generation of yuppies'. His young heroes were intelligent, neurotic, introverted and do not always behave gallantly against women. In the Canadian film 'Apprenticeship Duddy Kravitz' (The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, . 1974) Dreyfus has created a vivid image of an anti -, . climbing to the summit of success, . but energetic, . cheerful and with a special sense of the ironic attitude towards the role, . which forced himself to play,
. In 1975, when oceanographer role in the blockbuster Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws' (Jaws), Dreyfus became a symbol of daring youth on the screen, and his natural charm reminiscent of the best days of James Cagney. But after the shooting in 'close contact of the third degree' (Close Encounters of the Third Kind, 1977) and Oscar triumph of the 'Girls for farewell' (The Goodbye Girl, 1978) the tide has turned from actor. 'Snatch' (The Big Fix, 1980) and 'racing' (The Competition, 1980) frankly failed.
. Only in 1986, he returned to the cohort of actors first row, . played in two successful comedies, 'Be with me' (Stand by Me) and 'Rogue from Beverly Hills' (Down and out in Beverly Hills), . proved ill-wishers, . that it is too early to write off the Hollywood ship,
. And in later years, he removed many, though not always successfully. His work in the film 'Surveillance' (Stakeout, 1987), 'Go' (Let it Ride, 1989), 'Always' (Always, 1989), 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead' (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, 1990) - have notable milestones in the development of American cinema. But the real triumph visited him in the role of teacher of music in the movie "Mr. Holland's Opus' (Mr. Holland's Opus, 1994), nearly won the prize 'Oscar' and enthusiastically greeted by critics and audience. His last role - bonkers gangster in 'black' film, Larry Bishop's 'Time Reservoir Dogs' (1996) and a brilliant lawyer in the film 'Night of the Manhattan' Sidney Lumet confirmed the reputation of the venerable masters. Although Dreyfus did not become a superstar in Hollywood, as he predicted in 1977, his contribution to American kinokulturu undeniable, and his magnetism may envy the young.
