Biography LIN David
LIN (Lean), David (p. 25. 03. 1908 - 16. 04. 1991), English film director.
Born in Croydon. The path to stardom began with the work of messenger at the studio in 1927. In 1934 already was an editor, and in 1942 took as sorezhissera (with H. Coward), his first film 'in which we serve' (In Which We Serve), a kind of collective portrait of the crew of a warship.
As the director Lin is known by two qualities: the ability to work with actors and a keen sense of style. As a result, a small psychological study of the novel missed a housewife from the middle class has become in his hands in a tense drama 'short meeting' (1945, . prize at Cannes International Film Festival), . and adaptation of the novels of Dickens 'Great Expectations' (Great Expectations, . 1946) and 'Oliver Twist' (Oliver Twist, . 1948) acquired a pronounced romantic sound with the subtle styling of fine series.,
. Starting with 'Bridge over the River Kwai' (The Bridge On The River Kwai, 1957), a name synonymous with the concept of Linus 'big style'
. This includes large scale and, consequently, the high cost of production, as well as an epic cinematic treatment, the desire to link the private story or adventure story depicting major historical events. Lin was famous for careful consideration of all components of the future film, as a result of the preparatory periods were shooting and he has a pretty long time.
. The most complete of these qualities manifest in 'Lawrence of Arabia' (Lawrence Of Arabia, 1962), also the winner of seven 'Oscars'
. Grandiose panoramic shooting crowd scenes (the famous attack riders on camels), the fine development of character. Lawrence Peter O'Toole, concealing in itself, along with the heroism of human weaknesses, is still his best acting work. All this has made Lina a recognized master of directing. However, in an era of renewal of cinema in the early 60-ies, this approach turned academic manner that manifested in the next film Lina 'Doctor Zhivago' (Doctor Zhivago, 1965). Roman B. L. Pasternak, with its predominantly lyrical poems, expressed in words, could not stay within the Hollywood epic, so that, despite the audience success, the film did not become a great achievement of the wizard.
. Continuing his chosen line, Lin has already suffered a clear defeat in the 'Ryan's Daughter' (Ryan's Daughter, 1970), a romantic love story of a British officer and a young Irish during the Irish war of independence
. However, the use of newly declassified military optics allowed him to create a magnificent panoramic views (the film was awarded the 'Oscar' for the camera work).
. In the next scene, set up in 14 years 'A Passage to India' (A Passage To India, 1984), which became his last, Lina style was once again in demand in the years when the 'grand style' have been given to historical, nostalgic tribute
. Screen adaptation of the novel 20-ies on the relationship between the British and the Indians returned the viewer to a bygone imperial era, so that the very style of the director was perceived as a kind of 'retro'.
. In 1984, Lin was elevated to the dignity of knighthood.
