Sixto Alfonso Durц¦n Balen Cordovez was born July 14, 1921 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. In 1951 he began his career as minister of public works, and in 1960 he worked in the Inter-American Development Bank. In the oil boom years (1970-78) Duran was mayor of the capital of Ecuador, Quito, transforming it from a sleepy town in the highlands in the prosperous business capital.

. In the first round of voting he was second, the second round took place only nine months because of political tensions, and Duran lost his well behind. In 1988 he again took part in the elections, now the Social Christian Party, and became the third in the final vote count.
