Ignatius Potapenko, N. (Dec. 1856-17.05. 1929), writer. Born in. Fedorovka Kherson Province. Father Potapenko - Ukrainians, was a priest. Mother - farmer. He graduated from the Odessa Seminary, studied at the Novorossiysk University, then at the St. Petersburg Conservatory at the rate of singing. Began to publish in 1881.

Stories from the national Potapenko malorossiyskogo life were published in the 80's in the journal 'Case'. Widespread fame brought Potapenko story 'on active service' (1890), the hero of which, refusing the brilliant intellectual career, goes on 'active service' the local parish priest to help parishioners. The same ideal of the invisible, everyday activities for the benefit of the people asserts Potapenko and the novel 'No Hero' (1891), the name of which is opposed to the pseudo-heroic image of a nihilistic literature. Potapenko met and corresponded with a. P. Chekhov, published reminiscences of him. In stories and novels primarily in the life of the intelligentsia and the clergy, Potapenko, wrote reviews, essays, plays, several short stories was published in 'mediator'. The best works Potapenko ( 'On active service', 'Six', 'Damned glory') marked specificity of domestic and psychological detail, humor. In the 900 th staged the play 'High School', 'Atonement' and others. In 1915 he published the novel 'The Retreat'.
