Biography Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (Gaskell Elizabeth Cleghorn)
(1810-1865)
Fame won the manners in the provincial towns. Born September 29, 1810 in Chelsea (London). Year-old child was left without a mother, brought her aunt. In 1823 she was sent to boarding school in Stratford-upon-Avon. Arriving in 1831 to stay in Manchester, met her future husband, a priest Unitarian Church. In 1832, the newlyweds settled in Plymouth Grove (Manchester) and more anywhere they traveled. Become a writer Gaskell led tragic loss of her only son, who died in infancy of scarlet fever: the husband, wishing to divert Gaskell, persuaded her to take up the pen.
In the history of English literature book Gaskell Life of Charlotte Bronte (Life of Charlotte Bronte, 1857) is among the great biographies. In her first novel, Mary Barton (Mary Barton, 1848) and the novel North and South (North and South, 1855) provides perhaps the most reliable in the literature of those years the picture of the industrial revolution. In Ruth (Ruth, 1863) - this book here and there, burned for her frankness - wisely and without excess sentimentality addresses the problem of unmarried mothers.

Among the highest achievements Gaskell - Cranford novels (Cranford, 1853), beloved throughout the world for its warmth and humanity, and fans of Sylvia (Sylvia's Lovers, 1863). Cousin Phyllis (Cousin Phillis, 1864) - a love story in the spirit of U. Wordsworth. His last novel, Wives and daughters (Wives and Daughters, 1866), Gaskell did not complete - the work interrupted by the death. In this novel, highly valued by H. James for a series of remarkable images, created with amazing psychological precision, displayed the best of talent Gaskell.

Gaskell died in Alton (Hampshire County) November 12, 1865.
