Biography GEGENBAUR Karl (Gegenbaur Karl)
(1826-1903) Born August 21, 1826 in Wц?rzburg. In 1845 he entered the University of Wц?rzburg, where he studied under R. Kellikera and R. Virchow, in 1851 received a medical degree. Since 1853 - Lecturer University of Wц?rzburg. Since 1855 - professor of anatomy of Jena, in 1873-1901 - University of Heidelberg, at the same time director of the Institute of Anatomy of Anatomy at Heidelberg University. Major work Gegenbaura devoted to comparative anatomy and embryology of vertebrates. As believed Gegenbaur, the cells do not necessarily have to have a membrane, in his opinion, the main cellular components are the nucleus and cytoplasm. Gegenbaur first to apply an evolutionary approach to studying the development of the individual organism, thus laying the foundations of phylogenetic trends in the comparative anatomy. Gegenbaur - author of the textbook Foundations of comparative anatomy (Grundzge der vergleichenden Anatomie, 1874). In 1875 founded the magazine 'Morphological Yearbook' ( 'Morphologisches Jahrbuch') and for many years was its editor. Gegenbaur died in Heidelberg, June 14, 1903
