Biography Gabriel Gonzalez Videla
Born November 23, 1898 from near Santiago, in La Serena, where he received a secondary education. In 1922 he graduated from the Faculty of Law University of Chile. In 1929-1939 he was elected deputy of the National Congress, in 1939-1941 was appointed to the post of ambassador to France, Belgium and Luxembourg, and in 1942-1944 served as Ambassador of Chile in Brazil. In 1945 Gonzö¦lez Videla was elected to the Senate. In 1932-1937 was twice elected chairman of the Radical Party. In 1946 he became President of Chile. Put forward by a coalition of Left parties - the Democratic Alliance, the first in American history brought into government the Communists. However, already in April 1947 got rid of the communist influence, and in 1948 to ban the activities of the Communist Party and then relied on the Liberals. In April 1950 Gonzalez Videla made a visit to the United States, Chile, which had substantial financial and technical assistance. After finishing his term in 1952 ceded his post Carlos Ibö¦ö¦ez del Campo, withdrew from politics and took up banking.
In 1964, Gonzö¦lez Videla for a short time he returned to politics and became president of the Democratic Front. In February 1998, aged nearly 100 years, participated in the celebration of the 50 anniversary of establishment of the first permanent research station in Antarctica.
