Biography Baltasar Gracian (Gracin Baltasar)
(1601-1658) Born in 1601 in Belmonte (Aragon), he studied at the Jesuit school in Calatayud, and in 1619 joined the Order of Jesus. The theological education in Saragossa, where later he taught, took monastic vows in 1635. In 1651, without the permission of the Order published the first part of his didactic novel Kritikon (El Criticn); was subjected to ecclesiastical penalties, from which only death released him in 1658 . Apart Kritikona creative legacy Graciano consists mainly of five published under various pseudonyms treatises: Hero (El Heroe, . 1637), . Politician (El Poltico, . 1640), . Prudent (El Discreto, . 1646), . Pocket oracle (El Orculo manual, . 1647) and Wit, . Art or sophisticated intelligence (Agudeza y arte de ingenio, . 1648), . Hero Graciano not superman and a great warrior, a Stoic philosopher and at the same time immersed in the mundane concerns of people. Pocket oracle, translated A. Schopenhauer, consists of some 300 maxims, teaches readers how to gain qualities of ideal personality. Art sophisticated mind - a kind of textbook style, where it is argued that the brevity and wit - qualities necessary for thought and speech.
