Born January 15, 1791 in Vienna. In 1813 he entered the civil service and in 1832 became director of the imperial archives, in 1856, retired at the rank of Court Counselor.
Grillparzer seriously studied history, philosophy and literature of many countries - both ancient and modern, and this is reflected not only in his numerous critical essays, but in AMD. He wrote many lyrical verses, in particular the cycle Elegies of Pontus (Tristia ex Ponto, 1835), and two great novels - Sandomirsky Monastery (Das Kloster bei Sendomir, 1828) and a poor musician (Der arme Spielmann, 1847).

Slava Grillparzer must first of all its drama, in which happily combined the features of classicism, romanticism and realism. After a youthful sample of the pen, the tragedy of Blanche of Castile (Blanca von Kastilien), he created the tragedy of Foremother (Die Ahnfrau, 1817), which is a huge success presents in Vienna and throughout Germany. Then followed the play Sappho (Sappho, 1818) about the legendary tragic love of the great Greek poet, in 1818-1821 Grillparzer published a trilogy of The Golden Fleece (Das goldene Vliess), which skillfully handled the ancient legend.

His next two tragedies, Greatness and Fall of King Ottokar (Knig Ottokars Glck und Ende, 1825) and faithful servant of his master (Ein treuer Diener seines Herrn, 1828), develop the theme of Austrian history. The only comedy Grillparzer, Gore liar (Weh 'dem, der lgt), was published in 1838, this is a serious drama with a happy ending has caused such a sharp attacks critics that a playwright has decided to no longer show the public their drama.
