Born August 26, 1873 in Kauns-Bluffs (pc. Iowa). In 1896 he graduated from Yale University, earned a Ph.D., the leader of his dissertation work was a famous physicist Dzh.Gibbs. In 1899 he joined the laboratory of 'Western Electric' in Chicago, and in 1900 began to study wireless telegraphy. Trying to draw attention to, designed by electrolytic receiver called 'responders', built a wireless telegraph to send messages to the international competition sailors. In 1902 De Forest was founded in Jersey City firm 'American De Forest vayrles Telegraph' to produce devices for wireless telegraphy on the order of the Government and the Navy U.S.. In 1906, the successor company has become the 'United vayrles Telegraph'. De Forest established the first radio station in the five largest U.S. Navy bases, engaged in the development of horizontal reception, framework and pelengatornoy antennas, as well as the duplex mode send and receive. In 1907 the company organized 'Reydiotelefon' and soon received a contract to equip the U.S. Navy ships by wireless phones to its design. In 1910 he conducted the first in the history of music broadcast from the theater 'Metropolitan Opera', which gave the opera with E. Caruso. In 1911 De Forest's company went bankrupt, and he settled as an engineer in the company 'Federal Telegraph "(San Francisco). Engaged in improving its electronic tube, the first version of which created in 1905, when I was searching for a way to improve the reception of radio waves. In 1907 received a patent for his 'audion' - a three-electrode tube with a control mesh electrode (triode). De Forest was able to interest his invention company 'American Telegraph and Telephone' and in 1913 sold her the right to use audionnyh amplifiers for telephone. In 1913, the first time demonstrated the active oscillator at audione. In 1915 De Forest held a session of radio communications between Arlington (pc. Virginia) and Paris, while the receiving device was installed at the top of the Eiffel Tower. In 1916 he organized the first broadcast news on radio.
In 1920 De Forest to establishing a sound film, called 'fonofilmom'. The first found a practical method of photographing sound waves on a film with the image. Participated in the creation of television and technology high-speed image transmission phototelegraphic.

De Forest died in Hollywood (pc. California) June 30, 1961.
