Biography Hermann Sudermann (Sudermann Hermann)
Born September 30, 1857 in Mattsikene (East Prussia). In his youth was a student pharmacist, but later had been able to study at Tilsit and Konigsberg. In 1877 he moved to Berlin, where he lived until his death, except for 1894, held in Dresden. Sudermann died in Berlin on November 21, 1928.
Sudermann began a literary career as a journalist. His first novel, Mrs. care (Frau Sorge, 1887) remains the most popular of his works, among others - Cat Bridge (Der Katzensteg, 1890), Wedding Iolanta (Jolanthes Hochzeit, 1892), Past (Es war). His first drama, Honor (Die Ehre, 1889), brought him fame. Not embarrassed by the failure of the play Death of Sodom (Sodoms Ende, 1891), Sudermann created the most successful play, his homeland (Heimat, 1893). Until 1908 he wrote nine dramas and seven one-act plays, including the happiness in the corner (Das Glck im Winkel, 1895), John the Baptist (Johannes, 1898), John flame (Johannisfeuer, 1900), "Long live life! (Es lebe das Leben, 1912). On the later novels and plays Zuderman little that can be said. Significant others, perhaps, infamous, but smash novel high song (Das hohe Lied, 1908). It is noteworthy essays, published under the title of Lithuanian history (Litauische Novellen, 1917), and autobiography book of pictures of my youth (Das Bilderbuch meiner Jugend, 1922).
