The Fundamentals of Geology Lyell has shown that modern geological processes are not fundamentally different from those that occurred on Earth in the past (the principle of actualism). The book had a dramatic effect on biological representation; Charles Darwin's early observations were made on the basis of the ideas of Lyell, who later actively supported Darwin. Lyell proposed the term 'paleontology' to describe the science of fossil organisms, divided into three tertiary division, who called the Pliocene, Miocene and Eocene. The basis of modern geology put the doctrine of uniformity, established Dzh.Gettonom (Hutton). In 1864, Lyell became president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. He was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Society. There was a corresponding member of the Institute of France, as well as a member of many academies and scientific societies.
