Biography LOPEZ Alfonso PUMAREHO (Lpez Pumarejo, Alfonso)
Born January 31, 1886 in Onde. He was educated in private schools, studied political economy, finance and management in the U.S. and London. In 1910, together with his friends founded a newspaper, 'Liberal' ( 'El liberal'), became the chief editor and co-owner of the newspaper El Nacional dyario '(' El diario nacional '). In 1915 he was elected to the National Assembly deputy of the Liberal Party from the department of Tolima. He was engaged in banking. During the presidential campaign in 1929 supported the Liberal candidate Enrique Olaya Herrera. After the victory of the liberals was appointed ambassador to Great Britain. In 1933, helped resolve the border dispute with Peru. He was elected president of Colombia, held the post twice - in 1934-1938 and in 1942-1945. Distributed the land of large estates, strengthened unions, restricted the access of foreign capital to natural resources, given women voting rights. A few months before the end of his second term as president, Lopez was forced to resign. President Mariano Ospina PцLrez LцЁpez in 1946 appointed head of the Colombian delegation to the first Assembly of the UN, and in 1947 the post of Secretary of the Security Council. Lopez - author of several works: The International Politics (Politica internacional); official policy (Politica oficial); Messages (Mensajes); Letters (Cartas); Speeches of President Lopez (Discursos de presidente Lpez, 1934-1938). Lopes died in London on November 20, 1959.
