Biography Etienne Louis Malus (Malus Etienne-Louis)
(1775-1812) Born June 23, 1775 in Paris. He studied at a military engineer in Mц?ziц?res (now Charleville-Mezieres), graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. He served in the engineering troops, took part in Napoleon's Egyptian campaign (1798). In 1801 headed the construction of fortifications, in Strasbourg, Paris, Antwerp. Malus doing research in the field of optics. In 1808 opened the polarization of light upon reflection and the law of change in the intensity of polarized light (the law of Malus), and in 1811 - the polarization of light due to refraction. Developed the theory of double refraction in crystals. Among the works Malus - On the properties of light reflected from transparent bodies (Sur une proprit de la lumiц?re rflchie par les corps diaphanes, 1809) and the course of analytical optics (Trait de l'optique analytique, 1811).
Malus died in Paris on February 23, 1812.
