Biography Agostinho NETO (Neto Agostinho)
Born September 27, 1922 in the village Ikolo and Bengo. In 1944-1947 he worked as secretary of the American mission of Bishop Ralph Dodge. Arranged Dodge Neto scholarship to study medicine in Portugal. For participation in the youth movement in 1952, Neto was arrested in 1955-1957 was in detention. In 1958, resumed his studies, received her medical degree in 1959 and returned to Angola. He was arrested and was imprisoned first in Cape Verde, and then in Portugal. In 1962, Neto has escaped. In Morocco, joined the Movement for the Liberation of Angola. In 1962 he was elected chairman of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), appealed to the Soviet Union and Cuba, with a request for military assistance.
With the help received from the Soviet weapons MPLA since 1975 embarked on the struggle for power. By controlling the area of Luanda, the MPLA eventually managed to repulse the attacks of opponents - FNLA and UNITA in the north to the south. After Angola became independent in 1975 formed the MPLA government, and Neto became president.
Neto died in Moscow on September 10, 1979.
