Biography OBASANJO Olusengun (Obasanjo Olusegun)
Born in Abeokuta, near Lagos, March 5, 1937. He was educated at a Baptist school, worked as a teacher. In 1958 he joined the army. He received military training in the UK. He became known in the army after the events of the civil war in Biafra (Eastern Nigeria) in 1967-1970, during which had a decisive operation to capture rebel leader for. Obasanjo entered politics in the late 1970's. In 1975 he became deputy seized power, General Murtala Mohammed. After killing the latter in 1976 became president. Under the plan, Obasanjo, the election, in which he had not participated, took place in 1979 and led to the victory of Shehu Shagari.
In 1980 Obasanjo was involved in a number of diplomatic missions in Africa on behalf of the UN and the Commonwealth, was a candidate for the post of UN Secretary-General. In 1995 he was imprisoned on charges of plotting to overthrow the government Sani Abacha. In June 1998, was released after the sudden death of Abacha. Abdulsalam Abubakar, who became head of state after the death of Abacha, has promised to hold national elections in early 1999. In October 1998 Obasanjo joined the People's Democratic Party and announced his participation in presidential elections. At the February 1999 election was 62,8% of the votes and officially took office in May 1999. After the election, Obasanjo has promised to fight political corruption, promote economic growth, reform the security agencies.
