(1834-1886)
Born August 31, 1834 in Paderno Fazolaro near Cremona. Entered in the Milan Conservatory in 1843 and graduated its completion in 1854. From 1854 to 1856 Ponchielli Cremona served as organist at the Church of Sant Hilari, and then became conductor of the municipal brass band in Piacenza. In 1881 he was appointed music director (maestro di cappella) in the Cathedral of Bergamo, but a year later returned to the Milan Conservatory as a professor of composition. Among his students were young composers J. Puccini and P. Mascagni (especially strong influence Ponchielli had on Mascagni)
. First opera Ponchielli - The Betrothed (I rromessi sposi) was placed in Cremona in 1856, the second edition of the opera, . appeared in 1872, . had great success when staged in Milan, . and in 1873, Ponchielli was commissioned to two ballets - Gemini (Le due gemelle) and Klarin (Clarina),
. Among the works of composers of other genres - cantata for the transfer of the ashes of Donizetti in Bergamo (1875), hymn memory Garibaldi (1882) and several religious pieces. However, in the history of music Ponchielli remained primarily as the author of operas, and, although he wrote nine operas, only one of them, La Gioconda (La gioconda), still the world's repertoire.

Gioconda was first staged at the Milan theater 'La Scala' April 8, 1876. Now the opera is performed in the second edition, which was made in December of that year. Libretto by the Mona Lisa has appeared over the signature 'Tobio Gorrie' - an anagram of the composer Arrigo Boito, the author of the opera Mephistopheles and the librettist of several works by Verdi. Music by Ponchielli La Gioconda was estimated by contemporaries as rough as the libretto has been criticized for the unrealistic images of the main. On the other hand, in the Mona Lisa is a catchy theme, and in general the music convincingly conveys the profound human feelings. In the opera, the six major parties, with a capital regarded as one of the most difficult soprano parts in the world repertoire. The most popular pieces of the opera - 'aria suicide' Mona Lisa in the last act and 'Dance of hours' (ballet scene from Act III).

While contemporaries sometimes compared with Ponchielli Verdi and Rossini, he went down in history primarily as the author of a work. Ponchielli died in Milan on Jan. 16, 1886.
