Biography Adam Elsheimer (Elsheimer Adam)
(1578-1610)
Born in Frankfurt. Since 1600 he lived permanently in Rome, where he achieved fame, was a friend of Rubens, Paul Bril and Peter Lastmanom, later a teacher of Rembrandt.
Elsheimer paintings - mostly landscapes of small size with scenes of biblical or mythological subjects. In recent years, the artist preferred the life of nocturnal landscapes, lyrical rather than dramatic nature. The painting Flight into Egypt (1609, Munich, Alte Pinakothek), he uses the scenic effects of moonlight and the burning fire in the foreground. In the painting of Jupiter and Mercury with Philemon and Baucis (1608-1609, Dresden Art Gallery), the action takes place in the interior, which was written with a virtuosity worthy of Rembrandt. Survived several engravings Elsheimer. These elements of the Netherlands, Venetian and Roman artistic traditions are united in a purely personal and mature style. The roots of art Elsheimer - in the tradition of the Netherlands, to which he, in turn, has had a profound impact, which proves the work of Rubens, Rembrandt and Seghers. Elsheimer died in Rome in 1610.
