Biography Adam Elsheimer (Elsheimer Adam)
Born in Frankfurt. Since 1600 he lived permanently in Rome, where he achieved fame, was a friend of Rubens, Paul Bril and Peter Lastmanom, later a teacher of Rembrandt.
Elsheimer paintings - mostly landscapes of small size with scenes of biblical or mythological subjects. In recent years, the artist preferred the life of nocturnal landscapes, lyrical rather than dramatic nature. The painting Flight into Egypt (1609, Munich, Alte Pinakothek), he uses the scenic effects of moonlight and the burning fire in the foreground. In the painting of Jupiter and Mercury with Philemon and Baucis (1608-1609, Dresden Art Gallery), the action takes place in the interior, which was written with a virtuosity worthy of Rembrandt.
