Vladimir Voinovich was born September 26, 1932 in Dushanbe. Father - a journalist, a mother - a teacher of mathematics.

In May 1941 his father moved to Zaporozhye, then the war, evacuation, and further movement on the territory of the USSR. He lived in the Stavropol Territory, in the Kuibyshev region, in the Vologda region, again in Zaporozhye in the Crimea and in Moscow. He worked as a shepherd, carpenter, mechanic, aircraft mechanic, instructor of Agriculture Regional Executive Committee, editor of All-Union Radio. Four years (1951-55) served as a soldier. Studied when the opportunity to night school, out of ten graduated five classes: the first, fourth, sixth, seventh and tenth. One and a half years he studied at the Pedagogical Institute.

The army began to write poetry. Then he turned to prose. The first story, "We live here" was published in the journal Novy Mir in 1961. Then there were published stories and novels "The distance of a mile," "I want to be honest," "Two comrades," "Lady," "The degree of confidence". In 1962 he was admitted to the Union of Soviet Writers. Since 1966 participated in the movement for human rights. Since 1968, for his human rights activities and unsympathetic portrayal of Soviet reality in the novel "The Life and Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin persecuted. In 1974 he expelled from the Writers' Union.

In December 1980, forced to emigrate in 1981 by decree N. Brezhnev stripped of his Soviet citizenship, which 10 years later was returned by order of M. Gorbachev. Lived in Germany and the U.S..
