Agatharchides Cnidus, Agatharchides, II in. BC. e., the Greek historian and geographer who worked in Alexandria. The author of two non-preserved historical works about the events in Europe and Asia in 10 books, . as well as geographical work entitled On the Red Sea (Ta kata tes Erythras thalasses), . which contained a description of, . lying around the Persian Gulf, . known in ancient times the Red Sea; preserved in Photius and the excerpts from Diodorus, . A. relied on the earlier work Ctesias and Eratosthenes, and based on the stories of merchants and formal descriptions of journeys, which he found in the royal archives in Alexandria. He was an advocate of simplicity and consistency of style.
