Biography BYZANTINE Aristophanes (Aristophanes)
Aristophanes of Byzantium, Aristophanes, ca. 257-180 years. BC. e., Greek scholar. From early youth he lived in Alexandria. Considered a disciple Zenodota, Kallimaha and Eratosthenes. Ok. 195 g. Eratosthenes was the head after the Alexandria Library. The most outstanding was his pupil Aristarchus of Samothrace. A. prepared commented edition of Homer through the work of their predecessors, mainly Zenodota, he admitted later the first prefix in the final part of the book. XXIII (with 298 verses) and XXIV kn. Odyssey. He has also developed a system of criteria (see. Zenodot).
Published Hesiod, lyric poets of the VI and V centuries. BC. e. (Alcman, Alcaeus, Anacreon, Pindar), staroatticheskuyu comedy (Aristophanes, and, perhaps, and its other representatives), as well as for the first time issued a tragedy (Euripides, Sophocles, probably by Aeschylus). A. was also, reportedly, the first scientist who shared the lyrics of the chorus in the tragedies in metric units, fixing this division graphical method. It is unlikely that A. published the comedy of Menander, although deeply admired this poet. Since publishing A. were related, and its presentation (Hypotheseis), representing the kind of summary of information about individual dramas, were given based on the work peripatetics (cm. Aristotle) and Kallimaha the dates and number of productions of the play.
Authentic Statement A. survived only a few, much more we have the later revisions and imitations, wrongly attributed to a. From large lexicographic studies A. Lekseis preserved only excerpts from some parts of. This was the first product of this type covering the whole of Greek literature, poetry and prose, the review also conversational turns Hellenistic era. A. formulated and the general rules of the Greek declension, recognizing the basic principle of analogy, which controls the language. Doubtful, however, the fact of his speech to the polemical work against Chrysippus.
