In 1959-1961 worked as an engineer of OKB-1 (now Á? RKK Energia Á• Á•?); was designer-linker. In 1961-1966 Á? deputy chief engineer and designer of ships Á• Á•? East and Sunrise Á• Á•?; participated in the design, development, development of test and launch of spacecraft. In 1968 he graduated from the Kolomna flying club at the rate of pilot-athlete.
Since 1966 Á? Detachment astronauts (group of civilian experts Á•¿ 2). Made 2 space flight.
12-17 October 1969 made a space flight as a flight engineer of the spaceship Soyuz-7 Á• Á•? duration of 4 days 23 hours. The crew participated in the first group flight of three spacecraft (with the Soyuz-6 Á• Á•? and Á• Soyuz-8 Á•?), during which they performed rendezvous and maneuvering.

Bronze bust installed in Moscow on the street bearing his name (on the Northern AO). His name is named as the streets in Vladivostok, Rostov-on-Don, Mariupol (Ukraine). His name is a crater on the Moon, asteroid 1790 Volkov. On the territory of the MAI in 1974 a museum was created VN Volkova.
