In the Army since 1915, served as an assistant engineer in the Naval Aviation. Member of the First World War. Since 1918 - the mechanic aviation detachment in Gatchina school aerobatics. Member of the Civil War. In 1921 he graduated from the school of marine pilots in Samara. He served in the military drill of the Baltic Fleet. In 1924 he graduated from the Sevastopol military aviation school marine pilots, left in her flight instructor. In 1929 he graduated from advanced training courses commanders at the Air Force Academy named after NE Zhukovsky.
From 1931 - pilot GVF; flew on routes in Siberia and the Far East. Since 1932 commanded a detachment of the Polar Aviation General Directorate of the Northern Sea Route. In the rescue Chelyuskinites 9 sorties and evacuated 39 people from the camp.
