Born June 24, 1923 in the village now Vasilenkovo Shevchenko area of Kharkiv region (Ukraine). Ukrainetz. After junior high school he graduated from Berdyansk Agricultural College.
In the army since 1941. Initially, he studied at radio courses, and then sent to Kamyshinskoe tank school, where he graduated in 1942.
