In March 1544, our troops launched offensives in order to complete the liberation of the Right-Bank Ukraine. Neither spring tide, or deep gorges and ravines, filled with water, nor the tremendous strain relaxation of people who did not know, nor the stubborn resistance of the enemy - nothing could stop rushing to the south of. Particularly successful track 8-th Guards Mechanized Corps, commanded by Maj. Gen. I.F. Dremov. In this case served and Paul Trunkin. Already 24 March 1944 21-th Brigade went to the Dniester in the village Potochische Gorodenkovskogo area Stanislav area. The river had to force the move, without any delay.
In the village Ustechko our soldiers helped local residents. They provided them with fishing boats, timber, empty drums. Trunkin together with the second number he built the raft, loaded gun at him, and boxes of charged disks, grenades and night swam to the opposite bank. Dniester in these places rather narrow, so the already ten minutes later the machine gunners broke river. Camouflaged in the dense bush, they surreptitiously made their way through the front line of defense in unknown places, and, as had been ordered to the battalion commander, found here his gun.
. Nearby heard the German language, but the gunners had no right to engage in battle until the battalion did not begin until the river crossing
. At midnight, the third battalion proceeded to force the river. Enemy rockets lit up the Dniester, and found the rafts and boats, approaching the western shore. And literally within two or three minutes talking pillboxes, from somewhere in the height hit the enemy batteries. Among the dozens of flares Trunkin clearly distinguished one red - a signal for opening fire. The first is a long queue, he destroyed the enemy machine gunners who were away at 50 - 60 meters. Firing points, which was even closer, with grenades mate. Having settled with the immediate "neighbors", the machine gunners began to fire along the enemy trench, which accumulated Nazi machine gunners.
The anger blow from the rear for the fascists was a complete surprise. Among them stood panic. Only a few minutes later the Germans understood the situation, realized that the rear firing only one of our machine. A large group of machine gunners began to surround Trunkina, but brave gunner fought bravely against the enemies. Well-aimed rounds from machine guns and hand grenades, he destroyed 30 Nazi. During this unequal duel on the shore heard the powerful "Hurray!". The battalion was rushed to a height. Opponent Kolomyya hastily retreated, leaving the battlefield heavy weapons and more than a hundred dead and wounded. Brilliant success was achieved thanks to the heroic actions of the machine gunner Trunkina.
