(1901 - 1993)

Born on July 26 (August 8, NS) in St. Petersburg in the family of an employee of the Ministry of Finance. Received a good education at home, she studied at school.

After the revolution in 1919 - 20 studied at the Rostov-on-Don, then returned to Petrograd. As a poet, in 1921 entered the literary circles of Petrograd. In June

1922 received permission to leave the country with Khodasevich, who became her husband. At first she lived in Gorky in Italy, then - in Paris

. For 15 years, was the literary staff of the Paris daily newspaper "Latest News", which was published her first prose "Biyankurskie holidays, then the novels" Last and First "(1930)," Lady "(1932)," Without the sunset "(1938 )

Appreciation of criticism was the book "Easing of Fate" (1949), absorbing stories of 1934 - 1941 period. Particular success was the book "Tchaikovsky. History of single life "(1936).

During the Second World War, lived in occupied France. After the war, was the editor of the literary pages of the Paris weekly "Russian Thought", where in 1948 - 49 was printed in its reporting from the courtroom about the case of defector Vladimir Kravchenko. At the same time in New York "New magazine publishes its best stories.

In 1950 moved to the U.S.. Since 1958 teaching at Yale, then at Princeton University. In 1969, English (London, New York) in 1972 in Russian (in Munich) published an autobiographical book Berberova - "My italics, greeted the approval of critics and readers' interests.

Among the most significant works of recent decades is the book "Iron Woman" (1981).

In 1986 a study published sensational "People and boxes. Russian masons XX century ". The last years of life N. Berberova held in Princeton, as a university professor, retired. Here and died in 1993.
