Born May 27, 1937, Mr.. in Leningrad, on the Petrograd side.
The first childhood memories are connected with the blockade winter 1941 - 42. Then the evacuation - Ural, Tashkent, from which he donates his "journey" which continues unabated to this day.
Graduated from high school. In 1957 - 58 he served in the construction battalion in the North. He studied at the Geological faculty of the Leningrad Mining Institute, Diploma in 1962. A. Bitov began writing in 1956, first published in 1960, still in his student years. The first collection of short stories "Big Ball" was published in 1963 and caused controversy in the press. Artworks A. Bitova out at long intervals, with each publication attracted the attention of readers who did not pass unnoticed. The last break lasted nearly 10 years, until 1986. Novel "Pushkin House" was written in 1971, but was released in the U.S. only in 1978. The first Soviet publication was made possible in 1989.
A. bits - the author of numerous short stories, novels, essays and literary-critical essays. They are collected in his latest books: "Book of Travels", "Articles from the novel" (1986), "Man in the Landscape" (1988), "Tales and Stories" (1989), the novel "Catechumen" (1996). Last piece bits - "Empire in four dimensions", published by his own design, text and even design.
A. Bitov often happens in the United States to give lectures on Russian literature. Chairman PEN-Club in Russia.
