Biography Henri Philippe Pö?tain (Petain)
Pö?tain, Henri Philippe (Petain), (1856-1951), French military and statesman, collaborator. Born April 24, 1856 in the Cauchy-la-Tour, Pas-de-Calais, to a peasant family. In 1878 he graduated from the Military College Saint-Cyr. During the 1-st world war in the rank of general in command of an infantry brigade, then the Army Corps. In June 1915 - April 1916 commanded the 2 nd French army, which participated in the Battle of Verdun. In May 1916 appointed commander of Army Group "Center", in April 1917, Chief of Staff, in May 1917, Chief of the French army (instead of the general P. Nivelle). November 21, 1918 received the title of Marshal. In 1920-31 Pö?tain was deputy chairman of the Supreme Military Council and at the same time (since 1922) the Inspector General of the Army. In February-November 1934 - Minister of War. In 1939-40 Ambassador to Spain.

May 17, 1940 Pö?tain was appointed Deputy Prime - Minister, and on June 16 - Prime Minister. Conducted progermanskuyu policy. July 22, 1940 Pö?tain signed an Armistice with Germany - the capitulation of France. July 10, 1940, after the move of the Government in Vichy, the French National Assembly transferred Pö?tain full powers, which meant the elimination of the regime of the Third Republic. In July 1940 - August 1944, Pö?tain - Head of State (until April 1942 while head of government pro-Nazi regime "Vichy"). Policy of cooperation with the occupying Nazi authorities. In April 1945, tried to escape, but later voluntarily returned to France and was arrested. In August 1945, was sentenced by the Supreme Court to death, commuted to life imprisonment. Died July 23, 1951 in Port-Zhuenvile.
