Abu al-Wafa - outstanding Arabic astronomer X century. By observing the movement of the sun improved calendar, measured slope of the equator to the ecliptic. Studied the unevenness of the moon's motion, opened a new inequality - a variation, and later independently by an open Tycho Brahe. This unevenness, in contrast to the already known at the time of Hipparchus and Ptolemy's equation of the center and evektsii, manifests itself in the epoch, intermediate between the compounds of opposition and quadratures. He may have suspected Ptolemy, and therefore introduced variations of the lunar epicycle (prosnevzis). Therefore, some astronomers, especially the French (eg, Bio) saw the opening of Abu al-Wafa mere repetition of the opening of Ptolemy. Opening of Abu al-Wafa, however, went unnoticed and was appreciated only after many centuries, historians. Widespread fame Arab astronomer brought his great essay on astronomy, which at times assumed for the translation of "Almagest". The merit of Abu al-Wafa is also used in astronomy tangents, long before Regiomontanus (I. Mц+ller).
His name was given to a crater on the back side of the Moon.
Abu al-Wafa was born on June 10, at 940 Buzdzhane, in the State of Khorasan. His work marked the last period of prosperity in Baghdad astronomy, concentrated in Baghdad observatory (built on the orders of ruling in Mesopotamia Sharaf al-Pressure). Abu al-Wafa was the most prominent observer of the Research Center.
