Biography Ann VETEMAA
VETEMAA, Anne (Vetemaa, Enn) (p. 1936), Estonian poet, novelist, playwright.
Born June 20, 1936 in Tallinn in the family of architect. Consciously began composing at the end of high school, wrote music and poetry. Following the advice his father, invited first to acquire a reliable profession, entered the Tallinn Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1959 with the specialty "chemical engineer". The choice of the field in no small degree influenced by that grandfather Vetemaa in 19 in. began to study photography and not throw it to the last days. Mysterious lights in the laboratory attracted the boy's grandfather, as well as the very identity of his grandfather, enjoyed tinkering with machinery and fashioned the first Estonian radio just two years after the opening Popova.
Not completed the three years of specialty, Vetemaa enrolled at the Tallinn Conservatory, where he graduated in 1965, but did not link his fate with music. 'I quickly felt a distant but very real limit of my ability - he confessed in an interview. - I felt that did not reach my classmates - now famous Pцгrt and Ryaetsa. Although studied almost one of the five. And back to the poems, sonnets: '.
The first publication Vetemaa refers to the 1958. Then go out collections of poetry, turning age "(1962) and" snowball "(1966). Vetemaa becoming one of the prominent figures in the generation of young Estonian poets, among them - such gifted writers as VP-E.Rummo and A. п¦пTп¦пЁ. But the rationalistic mindset and penchant for irony makes Vatemaa prefer poetry prose. He once again with extraordinary ease (one of the properties of his nature) changes the entire field and is given a new lesson.
The idea of the novel "Monument" (Nap. - 1964, published. - 1965) was born shortly before graduating from the conservatory, when the young composer realized that music does not become his main occupation. Yet the novel initially composing 'for themselves', without any thoughts about publishing. If the novel were not competing too new, it certainly was a new hero, frankly demonstrates the cynicism of its nature (a genre 'novel monologue' is the best contributed to this self-revelation of the hero).
We voor Sven, the hero of the novel, the mass of the merits. He is youngish, vigorous, besides chartered sculptor, candidate of architecture, a party member, he is single and in doing so he has a new apartment. The only major downside - lack of whatever talent. In art he is mediocre, but the dreams of full prosperity of. With such an arsenal, and he comes into play. The novel played out exactly like the blitz game of chess. The hero through a series of successful combinations manages to beat the far more gifted, . but nothing smyslyaschego in such games sculptor, . which was first commissioned a monument to the victims of fascism (Sven voor should be done only bas-reliefs for the sides),
. As a result, talented people away from work, expelled from the Union of Artists, the creation of the monument assigned to another sculptor - ineptly retrograde, and the share of Sven voor remain the same bas. It would seem that he did not win, committing vile and destroying the lives of others. In fact, he saved himself: a talented co-created the project in any additional decorations are not needed.
The fate of the first 'little novel' (such is the author's designation of the genre) was quite bizarre, but happy. The novel was banned for publication, . but the writer, . accidentally collided in the pub with the censor, . banned, . squandered with him a few days, . and official, . high regard for the work and experienced due to, . that he had to ban a book, . suddenly changed the verdict,
. Monument was published, and was marked by the All-Union Literary Award for Best Novel.
Director Valery Fokin put the book had won a resounding success performance in a Moscow theater 'Contemporary' (1978). Konstantin Raikin played the title role (she was one of his best theatrical work).
For "Monument" was followed a few 'small novels', which criticized the nature of action they termed as 'dramatic'. This "Tired" (1967), "Requiem for the harmonica" (Nap. - 1967, published. - 1968), "Eggs in Chinese" (Nap. - 1967-1969, published. - 1972)
. Literary critic IA Zolotussky, . analyzing the images of the main characters in the books Vetemaa, . Notes: 'This negative energy self-exposure has a positive aesthetic effect: in our eyes, creates a character, . similarity which is difficult to find in contemporary prose,
. This type of person that believeth not, voluptuously rooted in unbelief and yet appealing to the faith. Cried with anger, with all rights reserve irony XX century and the simplicity of the newborn. Whatever name he may have carried in the novels Vetemaa it - one person '
. The following prose pieces Vatemaa - "Memoirs Kalevipoeg" (1971), . amusingly stylized variations on the theme of the Estonian epic, . "Silver Ribbon" (1977), . Field guide Estonian Mermaids (1980) - frankly play Prose, . by which the Czech Republic a theatrical conference (among the reports were statements on the theme music mermaids, . Ethics mermaids, . Mermaid parasitology and t,
. etc.). I should also mention novels "MцTbius strip", "Snow Ball", "Srebropryahi".
Known Vetemaa and as a playwright, his plays, including "Dinner for Five" (Nap. - 1972, published. - 1974), "St. Susanna" (1974), "The Rosary" (post. - 1976) and others, were in various theaters of the USSR. For his work is characterized by both absurdiststkaya and antiutopicheskaya play "Again, Woe from Wit" (NAP. - 1974, published. - 1975). Its hero - has lost any concept of morality was a scientist experimenting with living creatures. He himself is a victim of a far more progressive scientific method - when the phone after the loss of the head continued to exist, to think, to accumulate information. Adherents of the new method of 'life extension' claim that paved the way to immortality.
Vetemaa and worked as a scriptwriter.
He has repeatedly awarded the Literary Prize of the Estonian SSR. Yu Smuul (1973, 1975, 1976). His works were translated into many languages.
Despite the fact that his grandfather had once been expropriated, Vatemaa in 1964 adopted the CPSU. Subsequently, he became secretary of the party organization department of the Estonian Writers' Union. After the political changes occurring, the first party organization in the USSR 'freeze' its activities (party fees are not paid, the meeting is not held). Vatemaa is not to the past of any claims: 'Every time scared just from the outside and inside it can be quite tolerable. I once lived and wrote during objectively tolerable: '.
Although the popularity of books Vetemaa after the collapse of the Soviet Union has decreased in proportion to decrease readership, he continues to work. His writing is once again translated into Russian. The novel "Alien" was released in the magazine 'Star'. Waiting for translation of most recent novel, "My sweet life", the hero of which - again an artist (on his business card marked 'marzipan sculptor and painter of marzipan').
Vetemaa By his own admission, teaches Portuguese language, which in Estonia knows almost no. Works together with composer Jaan Ryaetsom on a book of dialogues about the Soviet regime, . where they try to objectively weigh all the 'for' and 'against', . interesting to compare the social theories, . underlying the socialist transformation, . and the deplorable results, . caused by the embodiment of these theories into practice.,
