Baryshnikov was born January 27, 1948 in Riga (Latvia). Up to 12 years at a normal school, then - in the local Ballet School. He was accepted into the Leningrad Choreographic School. His teacher was the AI Pushkin, mentor Rudolf Nureyev. At age 18, after graduating from college, Baryshnikov was adopted in the ballet troupe of the Opera and Ballet of SM Kirov, and soon performed leading classical Party.

Abroad Baryshnikov made his first appearance in 1970, while in London on tour with the troupe Theater of. Kirov. In June 1974, while touring with the troupe of the Bolshoi Theater in Toronto (Canada) Baryshnikov refused to return to the USSR, guided by artistic rather than political motives. July 29, 1974, he debuted in New York in the play 'American Ballet tietr' Giselle, dancing with NR Makarova. Over the next four years, Baryshnikov played many leading parts in classical and modern ballets, from "Visions of Roses" by Michel Fokine to "From the sample to the case" (Push Comes to Shove) Tuayly Tharp to music by Haydn and Dzh.Lemba. Baryshnikov has also worked as a choreographer and performed lead roles in their own productions, "The Nutcracker" (music by Tchaikovsky) and "Don Quixote" (music by Minkus and others).

In 1978, Baryshnikov joined the troupe Dzh.Balanchina 'New York City Ballet'. Here he acted balanchinskih productions, including "Apollo" (music by Stravinsky), "Prodigal Son" (music by Prokofiev), "Orpheus" (music by Stravinsky) and "Harlequinade" (music by P . Drigo), and in some productions of Jerome Robbins. In 1980, Baryshnikov was artistic director of 'American Ballet tietr' and remained in that post until 1989. In 1990, Baryshnikov and choreographer Mark Morris founded the group 'White Oak Dance Project', which eventually turned into a big traveling troupe with the contemporary repertoire.

Among the awards Baryshnikov - gold medal in international ballet competitions in Varna (Bulgaria, 1966) and Moscow (1969). He starred in the films "The Turning Point" (The Turning Point, 1977), "White Nights" (1985), played a major role in the play on a story by F. Kafka "Turning" (1989).
