Biography -I-Menö?ndez Pelayo Marcelino
-I-Menö?ndez Pelayo, Marcelino (Menendez y Pelayo, Marcelino) (1856-1912), Spanish historian and literary critic, was born in Santander, November 3, 1856. He studied at the universities of Barcelona and Valladolid; post-doctoral degree in Madrid in 1875 received a scholarship from the Government for research work in the largest libraries in Europe. Since 1878 - Professor of Spanish Literature University of Madrid, where he remained until 1898, when he was appointed director of the National Library. Died May 19, 1912 in Santander, leaving hometown excellent library (45 000 volumes).

In his first major work "The Spanish science" (La ciencia espaola, 1876) Menö?ndez Pelayo-and-shed light on many neglected aspects of the Spanish thought in its relation to Western philosophy and science. "History of Spanish heretics" (Historia de los heterodoxos espaoles, 1880-1882) - painting a living history of ideas in Spain, written from the perspective of a devout Catholic. This work serves as a counterweight to the Spanish science, because here the author tries to trace the dependence of Spanish dissent from foreign influence and to prove the absence of its national roots. In the "History of aesthetic ideas in Spain" (Historia de las ideas estticas en Espaa, 1882-1891) and Menendez-Pelayo postpones polemical aside to act as a historian of aesthetics and criticism. The ability of penetration into the essence of the problem demonstrated in these volumes, have brought him a prominent place among European critics. They also published "The Origin of the novel" (Orgenes de la novela, 1905-1910) and "Anthology of lyrical poetry of Castile" (Antologa de poetas lricos castellanos, 1890-1906), including the Spanish-American lyric poetry.
