Russian students face off in mathematics tournament
Budding young mathematicians will pit their computational skills against one another in the 33rd annual "Gifted Student" competition starting on Saturday in the city of Kirov in central Russia.
"This year the competition has 46 teams of students in classes 6-8 from 20 Russian regions and also from Ukraine and Kazakhstan," organizer Yekaterina Perminova said.
She said the tournament included "mathematical combat," personal and team contests, and intellectual games.
"The purpose of the tournament is to stimulate students` interest in mathematics, and to form and strengthen ties between students, mathematicians and teachers in different regions of Russia and other countries," she added.
The tournament will finish on Friday, with winning teams rewarded with certificates, math books, puzzles and other prizes.
