In Bangladesh killed a suspect in the murder of American blogger
In Bangladesh killed a suspect in the murder of American blogger and writer Avijit Roy, said the police. The man died in a shootout with police early Sunday morning in Dhaka," said Abdul Baten, Commissioner of the detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan police, at a press briefing on Sunday.
Avijit, Roy and his wife were returning from the annual book fair, when they were attacked by religious fanatics with an axe in his hands. Writer hacked to death, his wife managed to survive.
The attack on blogger was one of the first in a series of violent attacks on atheists, religious minorities and gay activists. Police said most of the alleged militants were members of the banned Islamist group.
Authorities launched a massive crackdown last week, 11,000 people arrested in raids across the country, including about 145 suspected militants. The rest were charged with theft, drug trafficking, and violence.
In a police briefing Sunday, Baten said: "there were three of Them on the bike., police pursued the motorcycle. They opened fire on the police. One of the criminals died, but the other suspect managed to escape."
Officials suspect the killer was involved in at least two murders of bloggers, in addition to Avijit Roy.
A wave of murders activated a strong reaction from leading Islamic scholars in Bangladesh. On Saturday, the 100 thousand Islamic scholars have read a religious decree, which stated that terrorism in the name of Islam is considered UN-Islamic.
