A terminally ill Nobel laureate was released from prison

Nobel laureate and Chinese human rights activist Liu Xiaobo was refused permission to travel abroad for cancer treatment. 61-year-old Liu received a medical certificate and released from prison earlier this month after he was diagnosed with liver cancer late stage.

Vice-Minister of justice of China has met with diplomats from the US, Germany and the EU on Thursday to inform them about the case of Liu told the diplomats that Liu can not go abroad for treatment because he is too ill to travel. Liu was serving an 11-year prison sentence for "inciting Subversion of state power" in Jinzhou, near the city of Shenyang in northeast China. His case came under the international interest in connection with the claims of his supporters that he was seriously ill, because his cancer was not treated in prison.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the authorities of Shenyang seems to be trying to dispel this assumption, saying that his cancer was diagnosed less than a month ago, on June 7, after may 31, a medical test discovered unusual symptoms.

The medical team, consisting of 8 well-known oncologists, examined Liu 7 times and formed a treatment plan, adding that the hospital has invited practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to join the team at the request of the Liu family.

The new US Ambassador in China Terry Branstad urged Beijing to let Liu to be treated abroad. In his first public statements since arriving in China, the former Governor of Iowa told reporters that he hopes that both sides can work together to resolve the situation Liu.

The statement also said that Liu was suffering from hepatitis b to prison, and prison authorities have granted him an annual medical examination, as well as a monthly inspection, and no abnormal state was not discovered until the recent diagnosis.

In 2010, being in prison, Liu was awarded the Nobel peace prize for "his long and nonviolent struggle for fundamental human rights in China".
