In Barcelona police killed the suspected driver of the van
Spanish authorities on Monday killed the suspected driver of the van, which crashed into a crowd of people last week in Barcelona, according to Catalan police.
Younц?s Abujamal was killed during the operation in Subirats, West of Barcelona, police said on Twitter. Earlier, police said they shot dead a man wearing a suicide belt, but not immediately identified him as Abuakwa.
The robot was sent to remove the belt from the body before the officers approached him and made a positive identification, authorities said. The suspect also had knives in his possession when he was shot, said Jose Lewis Trapero, head of the Catalan police. Police killed Abuakwa in a rural area, sparsely populated and surrounded by pine trees.
22-year-old Moroccan citizen Abujamal allegedly was the driver of the van, which killed 13 people Thursday at Las Ramblas street which is a popular tourist destination. More than 100 people were injured. Investigators said Abujamal left the scene of the attack Thursday on foot and stole another car to escape.
Meanwhile, the Catalan police said in a series of tweets that four terrorism suspects had been arrested, and 8 were killed, "but that doesn't mean the investigation is over. We continue to work."
