Poland asks U.S. to help investigate presidential plane crash
Two members of the Polish opposition Law and Justice party have arrived in the United States to ask the country for help in investigating the Polish plane crash that killed President Lech Kaczynski, Poland`s TVN24 channel said on Wednesday.
Anna Fotyga and Antoni Macierewicz will hand over to U.S. congressmen a letter written by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the Law and Justice party`s head and the late president`s twin brother, in which he calls for the creation of an international commission to investigate the April 10 tragedy.
The letter, signed by some 300,000 Polish citizens, shows that Poles are "concerned over the investigation, [its] lack of clarity and growing difficulties," as well as over "the absence of any information and the elimination of evidence," Macierewicz said in the TV broadcast.
The Polish opposition will also ask the European Union and the United Nations for help, he added.
Both Russia and Poland have carried out separate investigations into the tragedy, which occurred when the worn-out Tu-154 with a top-level Polish delegation crashed near the western Russian city of Smolensk in thick fog, killing all 96 people onboard.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski has called on the Polish and Russian governments to assume full responsibility for "completely abandoning" the investigation and urged Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and Prime Minister Donald Tusk to step down.
The Polish government has described the opposition leader`s latest move, which former foreign minister Fotyga said was a "response to a U.S. initiative," as "absolutely scandalous, on the verge of treason."
In April, U.S. congressman Peter King(R-NY) drew up a plan for the creation of an international commission to investigate the Kaczynski plane crash, but his initiative has yet to be supported by other congressmen.
