The S/A systems: New Technology
Industry experts have believed that the introduction of the starter/alternator (S/A) concept in traditional gasoline-engine vehicles would coincide with the launch of 36V/42V electrical systems. Well, maybe not. European parts manufacturer Valeo has announced it will provide a 12V/14V-based S/A system for a new car from Peugeot-Citroen.
The S/A system allows complete engine shutdown in traffic stops to incrementally improve fuel efficiency and cut tailpipe emissions. Restart is instantaneous, says Valeo.
This new unit, while developed for an OE application, also may have the ability for retrofit on some existing late-model vehicles with late-model electronics. Valeo describes it as a bolt-on unit that uses existing alternator engine mountings. This S/A will not interfere with powertrain design as much as the types of integrated S/A systems now seen on the gas/electric hybrids offered by Honda and Toyota, according to the company.
The S/A features a standard claw-pole alternator that has enough power to turn over any engine up to a 4.2-liter size. No word on pricing, but it is believed that it will be a cost-effective application for any automaker that intends to upgrade its conventional engines with a S/A capability.
