China constructs dam in front of Habarovsk
Chinese authorities started construction of temporary dam on Amur to reduce damage from passing of toxic spot, which has already reached Amur.
Dam will supposedly prevent ingress of chemicals to water supply points of Habarovsk.
China has also sent Russia 150 tons of coal for water refinement.
As representative of Chinese water resources ministry Van Haibin has said, dam will be constructed within 3-4 days - by this moment toxic spot will reach settlement Fuan on Chinese side of Amur.
By Van`s words, designers had to review sizes of dam several days ago: length - 410 meters instead of 150, height - 3.5 meters instead 1.7.
"This measure can be explained by sharp increase of water level in Amur - China discharged large amount of water from reservoirs in order to dilute toxic spot", - said Chinese official.
By information of Russian Ministry of Emergency, polluted by benzene water has reached territory of Jewish autonomous oblast on Friday.
At present moment the length of benzene spot is estimated as 160 kilometers. As Ministry of Emergency considers, 70 settlements along Amur river can get into zone of possible pollution. About 1 million of people live there.
By words of authorities, concentration of harmful compounds in the river meets the standards. But it is expected that level of chemical`s content will grow by beginning of next week as spot approaches Habarovsk.
Russian ecologists reproached Chinese side for delay in announcement about crash and leak of toxic chemicals. But authorities of Chinese National Republic presented official apologies to Russia for possible ecological damage and promised to help in liquidation of contamination.
Crash at chemical plant in Chinese Tszilin town took place on November 13. About 100 tons of chemicals got into Sungari river, inflowing to Amur.
